October, 2000
Well, it's over. Summer has past. There are now more leaves in my yard
than there are on my trees. The beautiful sun of August and September has
been replaced by the bluster and wet of October. No more do I go to work
and come home in daylight. Now, I crawl out of bed as the first light of
dawn is painting the Cascades and drive home into gorgeous sunsets behind
the Olympics. The days of washing the Mustang after work are gone as well.
From now on, that will be strictly a weekend pursuit. The Mariners are
playing the Yankees in October. It was a good summer.
During my first show season as president of this club, I had a lot of fun.
Our show in April was a resounding success. I learned a lot that I am
applying to our upcoming show next April. We participated in a couple of
holiday parades in the area. (Note to self: bring more candy for the
kids.) We picked up several new members this year. Some are very involved
in the club and one produces both our website and our newsletter. Thanks
Jim! A few of us participated in our first MCA judged show at Mustangs
Northwest's Round-up in July. That was a learning experience for all
involved and very exciting in that all of us took home a trophy. I
personally attended eight shows this summer and enjoyed every one of them.
The folks in Port Angeles and Port Orchard had both perfect locations and
perfect weather. A special "thumbs up" to the organization at Port Orchard.
You set a standard I am hoping we can live up to next year at our show. I
learned the value of clear, concise directions to a show site on one trip,
which shall remain anonymous. Liz (my significant other) got her dream
truck, a 1994 Lightning, and took home her first trophy. It was a good
summer.
I've met a lot of great people and made some fine friends this year. Randy
Wenman and his son Jon of Aberdeen. Ian and Lisa Chapman of Shawnigan Lake,
British Columbia and their friend Dennis Atkinson. Al Schaffler and his
merry band of 'Stangers from Olympia. Bob McLaughlin from Vancouver, WA.
These are just some of the folks that I have come to know thanks to this
club. It was a good summer.
The internet has been a huge boon to our club. Our website is up and
running. As of the end of the first week of October, our site has logged
over 3,000 hits! Our guest book has been signed by people from as far away
as Saco, Maine and Miami, Florida (thanks Steve and Peter!) and several
people in Canada as well. www.islandclassicmustangclub.com has been named
"Ford Website of the Month" for October by MustangsandMore.com by owner
Steve LaRiviere. The web has gotten our name out in a big way and I've
learned a lot about the internet. It was a good summer.
All in all, my tenure as president has been an educational experience, both
relating to my car and relating to people. I have had to learn to
coordinate and try to satisfy 60 different people at a time. It never works
completely, but I try to do the best I can for the most people. I have
dealt with the frustrations that come from trying to get the membership
involved in the goings on of the club. In talking to other club presidents,
I find that this is not unique to our club and that makes me feel some
better. To those that have been involved, I thank you. You have made this
one of the most enjoyable, if busy, summers I have ever experienced.
With a new and permanent location for our show, I think next year will be
even better for the next person that takes over this seat. I look forward
to seeing all of my friends at Horsepower at the Harbor on April 8th 2001.
I will be our 10th annual show and shine. The best ever. It was a good
summer.
Dave
