Rendezvous 2000 Olympia, WA - September 24, 2024 See the Pictures!
September in the great Pacific Northwest is notoriously fickle in the
weather department. Any outdoor plans made in advance are chancy at best.
Our friends at Mustangs West should go out and buy a batch of Lotto tickets
after the luck they exhibited in the scheduling of "Rendezvous
2000".
The morning dawned crisp and clear on Sunday the 24th. Dave Clem, Liz
Daniel, Jim Adams and
Abigail the Faithful Basset Hound met at "Oh-dark thirty" for the caravan down I-5 to
Olympia. A relatively uneventful trip ensued and our little 2-car entourage
arrived on site by 9:30. Dan and Jan, having spent the night with their
daughter in Olympia, arrived just a few minutes later. Just a few moments
after that, Ken and Red Fritch (prospective club members) of Sedro Woolley
pulled in driving their 1993 Saleen.
Mustangs West arranged a beautiful venue for their show this year. Heritage
Park is on a lake directly across from the Washington State Capitol
Building. It's a rare treat to have a show on grass and the park, with it's
scattering of trees was the perfect setting for a car show. There was
plenty of room for parking with the designated areas very well marked and
well spaced. The locals had the show organized efficiently and registration
was a painless experience as well. After 30 minutes or so of getting rid of
the road grime, we all kicked back and enjoyed the day.
By noon everybody who was coming was there. The temperature had reached the
mid-seventies and not a cloud was to be seen in the sky, a picture perfect
day. The surface of the lake was mirror-like and the Capitol building's
reflection was a backdrop for Mustangs of all descriptions: coupes and
fastbacks, 6 cylinders and V-8's, 5.0's and 429's. Something for everybody.
I think it is interesting to note that there was not much representation of
"classic" Mustangs. There were only 6 1965 cars and 3 1966's. The vast
majority of attendees brought 1979 and newer vehicles. The non-Mustang
Fords category included a spanking new Ranger, an F-150 4x4, a Crown
Victoria, a Ranchero, a 427 Fairlane and a Lightning. A total of 86 cars
and trucks showed up for the festivities. As always, it was fun to see all
of our old friends from shows past. Randy and his son Jon were there from
Aberdeen and Al Shaffler of Mustangs West stopped to visit. Abigail the
Faithful Basset Hound was a big hit with young and old alike. Her ears were
just about rubbed off and her stomach scratched to excess. The other
participants were all enjoying themselves and favorable comments on all the
cars were exchanged.
With relative promptness the awards started about 3:15. In a departure from
the norm, the trophies were awarded from newest to oldest. This won't
change the world, but it was a nice change none the less. Our group of four
cars acquitted itself very well. All won a trophy: two firsts and two
thirds. Pretty darned good if I do say so.
By 5:00 we were back on the road heading north. Due to various individual
needs, our group was unable to convoy back together but it was just as
uneventful a trip home as it was heading south. Overall, Rendezvous 2000
deserves two enthusiastic thumbs up. I hope they have both the same
location and weather for their show next year. Great job folks.
