Can-Am Nationals
Northwest Fairgrounds, Lynden, WA - June 23-25, 2000
See the Pictures!

For the second year in a row, Island Classic Mustang Club participated in the Can-Am Nationals with the Rebel Cruzzers. This has become a very large event over the last few years and the Cruzzers approached the Club last year to supply man (and woman) power to handle the mechanics of putting on the show so that the Cruzzers could take care of the details and organization. Once again, Dan and Jan Klopp were our liaisons with our friends from Whatcom county. Through them, the club offered up the skilled help of 16 of our members.

This year the show ran from Thursday the 13th of June through Sunday the 16th. Several of our group were there for all four days while many more were there for the weekend (some of us do have to work after all). It was a resounding success! There were over 250 cars registered for the judged show with another 150+ cars there for show and shine. The Club handled the registration duties, signed in camping participants, helped with security at the gate and conducted a raffle. The weather was very cooperative and the sun was out the entire time. The only black mark on the weekend occurred on Friday when a man was injured by his own car as it ran over his leg while he was cleaning it. He was transported to a hospital where he was treated for a broken leg and an injury to his shoulder. Appropriately enough, he received the "hard luck" trophy in absentia.

Sandy Lankaar is the president of the Rebel Cruzzers and was instrumental in the organization of the Can-Am Nationals. It is through her hard work that this event took place. She is to be credited that the show runs as smoothly as it does and that it all came together so well. She and her family had to put together a car show, a street dance, a poker walk, multiple meals, an auction, a trophy presentation and deal with over 400 participants, the city of Lynden, the fairgrounds and our Club and she did it all with a smile. Great job Sandy! We all look forward to Can-Am 2001.

One last note. Since all of the Club members were hard at work for most of the weekend, only one of our member's cars was entered in the show itself. Dan and Jan entered their red 1966 convertible in the Mustang class. As usual, they won. Thank you to all of the Club members who participated. Once again, it goes to show that our club may be small, but we get things done!
