In January of 1969, Ford Motor Company started production of the 1969 Boss 429 Mustang in order to homologate the Boss 429 engine for NASCAR usage. Although the Torino and Montego were actually raced, the Mustang being the "image" car was chosen.
In order to fit the engines, the cars were shipped from the Ford assembly plant to an outside contractor -- Kar Kraft in Brighton, Michigan -- who performed the modifications. These included moving the front suspension outwards thus widening the track by 2in. and custom building the exhaust system. All of these modifications only added $1208 to the cost of the car, thus they lost money on every one they built! Even though they only needed to make 500 examples, they continued making the Boss 429 through 1970.
All vehicles, except for a handful of prototypes and a couple of factory drag cars; were completely assembled & fully dressed with thermactor pollution equipment, power steering, & exhaust manifolds. The cars were required to go through a complete final inspection for equipment verification and certification prior to final shipment. Each vehicle was assigned a KK 429 Nascar production number. Starting with KK-1201 running through KK-2558.
Each vehicle was hand assembled by Kar Kraft. The 1969 production ran from January 1969 through July 1969 and produced a total of 859 cars. This included two 1969 Boss Cougars. The 1970 production started in August of 1969 and ran through December 1969 producing a total of 500 cars, which included two 1970 quarter horse Mustangs that could do a quarter mile in 11 seconds flat. The total production for the Boss 429 Mustang -- including the two ‘69 Cougars and two ‘70 quarter horses -- was 1359 vehicles.
1969 Boss 429 Mustangs were available in five colors -- Raven Black, Royal Maroon, Black Jade, Candyapple Red, and Wimbledon White. The 1970 429s came in Grabber Blue, Grabber Green, Grabber Orange, Calypso Coral, and Pastel Blue.
