Featured Car of April 2000
2001 Concept Car

The concept -- which made its world debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in January 2000 -- pays homage to the fastback Mustang GT featured in the edge-of-your-seat police thriller Bullitt, starring Steve McQueen, released by Warner Brothers in 1968. For those who don't remember, the racing-green Mustang ripped up the challenging streets of San Francisco in furious, often airborne and ultimately successful pursuit of the Dodge-driving bad guys.

Many of the 2001 Bullitt Mustang's styling cues are based on the original Mustang featured in one of cinema history's most memorable car chases.

"With the Bullitt concept, we have visually and emotionally recreated the excitement of one of the greatest movie car chase scenes," says J. Mays, Ford Motor Company vice president of Design. "Still as popular today as it was when it was introduced in 1964, the Mustang and the Bullitt concept show the possibilities for customizing this car and keeping the excitement alive as ever."

The Bullitt concept is a 2000 Mustang GT that has been modified to resemble the Mustang used in the film. The exterior body panels are finished in Pursuit Green.

It features new front and rear fascia, a new hood, front and rear lamps, five-spoke 18-inch aluminum wheels reminiscent of the originals, unique gauges on the instrument panel and racing-inspired seats.

The 2001 Bullitt Mustang, sources said, would be a limited-edition car to top up the GT line of V-8 Mustangs. Price would be in the high $20,000s -- slotted between the $24,000 Mustang GT and the $30,000 Mustang Cobra.

Since the Mustang made its debut at the New York World's Fair in 1964, Ford has continued to combine the spirit of the original vehicle with new features and customization possibilities that delight current customers. Mustang has remained the sales leader in its segment for the past 13 years.

More than 6.9 million Mustangs have been sold since this American legend first rolled off the assembly line in Dearborn, MI. The Mustang has been the one of the most recognized and cherished American legends in automotive history!
